Viewing Guidelines
Look, But Don't Touch

It is pretty simple. When you are around manatees do not feed them or give them water. Basically, stay out of their way and leave them alone. It helps them to survive. More guidelines for boaters, divers, Florida Springs and nature enthusiasts are available from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

November. - March
Best Viewing Time of Year

The best time to see manatees in Florida is from November to March. Cooler temperatures during these months entice these gentle creatures to warm-water havens such as natural Florida Springs and power plant outlets. Throughout the winter, manatees congregate in large numbers, making it easier to spot them.

On colder days, when manatees congregate around these tempting warm sources, viewing opportunities are typically ideal. Whatever location you select to admire these peaceful sea mammals, try to time your visit with cooler weather to increase your chances of an outstanding manatee encounter.

Frequently Asked Questions: Find Manatee Locations

Where is the best place in Florida to swim with manatees?
Crystal River, on Florida's Gulf Coast, is the best ? and the only place in the United States where it is legal to enter the water with wild manatees. The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, established specifically to protect manatees, surrounds the spring-fed waters of Kings Bay. Guided tours with licensed operators under federal oversight are the recommended approach to ensure all regulations are followed.
When is manatee season at Florida springs?
Manatee season runs roughly November through March, with December through February being peak months. When coastal water temperatures drop below 68°F, manatees migrate to the constant 72°F warmth of spring vents. On cold winter days, hundreds of manatees may crowd together at Three Sisters Springs, Blue Spring State Park (which closes its spring run to water activities during manatee season, effective November 21, 2025), and Homosassa.
Is it legal to swim with manatees in Florida?
In most of Florida, you may be in the water near manatees, but must follow strict passive observation rules ? no touching, feeding, chasing, or disturbing them. Crystal River's Kings Bay is the only location in the United States where in-water encounters are actively managed and permitted under federal oversight. Violating manatee protection rules can result in federal fines up to $50,000 and up to one year in prison.
Which Florida springs have the most manatees?
Three Sisters Springs at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and Kings Bay consistently host the largest concentrations ? sometimes 300?500 manatees on cold winter days. Blue Spring State Park is another top site with a closely monitored resident winter population. Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park and Weeki Wachee are also important manatee refuges. Note that Blue Spring closes its spring run to all water activities during manatee season.
Are manatees at Crystal River year-round?
Some manatees remain in the Crystal River area year-round, as the constant 72°F spring water is comfortable in all seasons. However, the dramatic large gatherings ? sometimes hundreds of animals ? only occur during winter (November?March) when cold temperatures drive manatees from coastal waters inland to the springs. In warmer months, most Crystal River manatees disperse throughout Florida's waterways.
What should I know before visiting a spring to see manatees?
Arrive early ? manatees are most active in the morning. Wear a wetsuit in winter (72°F water feels cold over extended time). Book a licensed guided tour for Crystal River in-water encounters. Respect all sanctuary markers and never enter 'No Entry' zones. Keep movements slow and quiet ? sudden splashing causes manatees to leave. Let the manatee decide whether and when to approach you.
Can I touch or feed manatees at Florida springs?
No. Touching, feeding, giving water to, chasing, disturbing, or riding manatees is illegal under state and federal law everywhere in Florida. Even if a manatee approaches you, initiating physical contact yourself is prohibited. Feeding is particularly harmful: manatees that associate humans with food are drawn toward boats and high-traffic areas, dramatically increasing their risk of injury.
Do all Florida springs have manatees?
No. Manatees are most reliably found at springs directly connected to navigable waterways providing a travel corridor from coastal areas. The springs most associated with winter manatee populations are in Citrus, Levy, and Volusia counties ? Crystal River, Homosassa, Blue Spring, and Weeki Wachee. Springs in isolated inland locations without river access to coastal areas are far less likely to host manatees.
